The story behind this Breitling Classic AVI Chronograph 42 P-51 Mustang
As early as the 1930s, Breitling was already fitting cockpits with precision instrument clocks. In 1953, the brand brought this expertise to the wrist with the Ref. 765 AVI, a pilot’s chronograph featuring a rotating bezel graduated over 12 hours for recording flight times. Simple to use and highly legible, it was soon nicknamed ‘Co-Pilot’ by aviators. In 2023, to mark the model’s 70th anniversary, Breitling is launching the Classic AVI Chronograph 42 P-51 Mustang, reference A233803A1B1A1, one of four variations dedicated to legendary aircraft. It pays tribute to the single-seater fighter built by North American Aviation, which took 120 days to construct, made its maiden flight in 1940 and whose Merlin engine enhanced its high-altitude performance. One detail is often overlooked at first glance. Above the ‘Swiss Made’ inscription, the dial features the geographical coordinates of Breitling Chronometrie in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Case, calibre and strap of this Classic AVI
The 42 mm steel case, 14.7 mm thick, has a width between the lugs of 22 mm. Its bidirectional ratchet bezel, graduated to 12 o’clock, has a knurled edge designed for easy handling whilst wearing gloves. The black dial features large beige-toned Arabic numerals, a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, blued 30-minute sub-dials at 3 o’clock and 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock, and a chronograph seconds hand with a red tip. The domed sapphire crystal is anti-reflective on both sides, the crown is screw-down, and the watch is water-resistant to 100 metres. The screw-down caseback is engraved with the silhouette of the P-51 Mustang. Inside, the self-winding Breitling Calibre 23, certified as a chronometer by the COSC, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours, with a 1/4-second chronograph. The five-row steel bracelet alternates between polished and brushed links, assembled with screws, and fastens with a folding clasp bearing the brand’s ‘B’ logo.
Why this Breitling watch
The Classic AVI incorporates the design cues of the Co-Pilot in a 42 mm case, making it easier to wear than the 46 mm Super AVI. The black dial with beige numerals remains the most classic interpretation of an instrument panel, and the steel bracelet makes it ideal for everyday wear. The 12-hour bezel allows you to track a second time zone or a long duration; the chronograph measures short intervals; and the 100-metre water resistance covers everyday use. As a pre-owned item, it comes inspected, guaranteed and available for immediate delivery.
