The story behind this Ulysse Nardin FreakLab
In 2001, the Ulysse Nardin manufacture unveiled the Freak collection. A watchmaking concept designed without a traditional dial, hands or winding crown, in which the movement pivots to indicate the time. This model introduced the first silicon escapement components to overcome the constraints of lubrication. Reference 2103-138/CF-BQ continues this philosophy with the FreakLab variant. This version incorporates the UlyChoc system, an architecture that combines three conventional shock absorber components into a single element machined from silicon. A design that highlights the manufacture’s technical expertise.
Case, movement and strap of this FreakLab
The 45 mm case is crafted from titanium with a matt black DLC coating. It is paired with a forged carbon-fibre bezel featuring a marbled pattern unique to each piece. The absence of a crown means that time-setting is carried out on the bezel, which is unlocked by a latch situated between the lugs at 12 o’clock. The watch is powered by the in-house UN-210 calibre. This hand-wound mechanical movement is wound by rotating the case back. It offers an 8-day power reserve and operates at a frequency of 4 Hz. The hours are displayed via the lower bridge, whilst the upper tourbillon carousel indicates the minutes. The watch is fitted with a black calfskin strap with a sailcloth-style finish, fastened by a DLC-coated titanium butterfly folding clasp. The watch is water-resistant to 30 metres.
