The story behind this TAG Heuer Formula 1 Red Bull Racing
This TAG Heuer Formula 1 Red Bull Racing, reference CAZ101AZ.FT8090, is part of a limited edition of 3,000 pieces that the brand has dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Oracle Red Bull Racing team. The Formula 1 collection was launched in 1986, shortly after Heuer joined the TAG Group, featuring robust and colourful sports watches. The link with the Milton Keynes-based team dates back to 2016, the year TAG Heuer became its partner and official timekeeper. The deep blue of the dial echoes that of the single-seater, the team’s red logo runs along the dial between 8 o’clock and 11 o’clock, and the touches of yellow on the seconds hand and the flange are reminiscent of the team’s racing suit. The case back bears the series’ hallmark, featuring the ORB/20 logo, an engraved chequered flag and the inscription ‘ONE OF 3000’.
Case, movement and strap of this Formula 1 Red Bull Racing
The 43 mm case, crafted from black DLC-coated steel, features alternating satin-finished and polished surfaces and is 12.4 mm thick. Its screw-down crown and solid case back ensure water resistance to 200 m. The fixed blue bezel features a tachymeter scale marked ‘SPEED’, graduated up to 400, which calculates average speed from a timed distance over a known distance. Beneath the sapphire crystal, the finely grained blue dial features white Arabic numerals, luminescent hands, three blue sub-dials and a date window. The movement is the Ronda 5040.D calibre, a Swiss quartz chronograph that displays hours, minutes, a small seconds hand and the date, and measures short intervals to 1/10th of a second with a 30-minute counter. Its battery has a life of 54 months. The two pushers flank the crown, with the start pusher ringed in red. The blue rubber strap, which is textured and features a lighter-coloured central stripe, fastens with a sandblasted pin buckle, coated in black DLC and engraved with ‘TAG Heuer’.
Why this TAG Heuer watch
This edition is no longer available online from TAG Heuer, and the second-hand market remains the easiest way to acquire it complete with its anniversary presentation box. The quartz movement requires no winding, so it can be left in a drawer for several weeks and still start working again on the day of a Grand Prix without needing to be set to the correct time. The 1/10th-second chronograph and tachymeter bezel are used to time a lap or a stage. The black case, the blue dial and strap, and the red and yellow accents create a design faithful to the team’s colours, without being over the top. The tried-and-tested Ronda calibre remains easy to maintain.
