The history of this Roger Dubuis Too Much XL
The Roger Dubuis Maison was born in the 1990s from the encounter between a purist watchmaker and a visionary designer named Carlos Dias. Together, they decided to disrupt Genevan classicism with flamboyant creations while respecting the strictest technical standards. The Too Much XL model perfectly illustrates this provocative philosophy. Launched in the early 2000s, this watch bears an evocative name fully embracing its aesthetic exuberance. Its case stretches to the extreme and requires complex engineering with three lugs on each side instead of the usual two. This piece under reference RD98 represents the fascinating contrast between unrestrained design and a movement finished according to the ancestral rules of traditional Haute Horlogerie certified by the prestigious Geneva Seal.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Too Much XL
The armour of this piece in solid 18-carat rose gold adopts a bold rectangular geometry measuring 28 mm in height and 40 mm in width. The surfaces alternate between mirror polishing on the smooth bezel and refined brushing on the caseback. Beneath the flat sapphire crystal, the black and grey dial reveals a chequered motif reminiscent of carbon fibre. The immense Arabic numerals burst from the centre and are outlined in rose gold while incorporating luminescent material. Sword-shaped hands glide over the ensemble while a small seconds display with blued hand appears at 9 o’clock. The open caseback reveals the superb hand-wound RD98 calibre. This shaped movement finely decorated with Côtes de Genève oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers approximately 40 hours of power reserve. It integrates 33 jewels and a swan-neck regulator. To perfectly fit the three lugs of the case, a bespoke black alligator leather strap with large square scales completes the ensemble and fastens with an imposing rose gold folding clasp featuring the Maison’s openworked monogram.
Why this Roger Dubuis watch
This creation is a rare testimony to the manufacture’s early years of independence. Produced in an ultra-limited edition, this precise configuration exists in only 28 examples worldwide. Finding today a model from this era with such a level of hand finishing has become a challenge for demanding collectors. Its atypical allure appeals to enthusiasts seeking a timepiece of character far removed from the beaten paths of traditional watchmaking. It offers a perfect balance between the stylistic audacity of the 2000s and the purism of a very high-end calibre.
