The graphic design of this Piaget Cœur ring
As early as the 1960s, Piaget has made coloured gemstones a hallmark of the Maison, even on the dials of its watches, preferring the vivid hue of a gemstone to the sheer whiteness of a diamond. This Piaget Cœur ring, engraved with the year 1996, continues this tradition with a heart-cut blue topaz, of a deep, limpid blue, estimated at approximately 3.60 carats. The metal is 18-carat white gold, hallmarked 750. Offered here as a pre-owned piece, it is one of the Maison’s jewellery creations from the 1990s, the decade that also saw the launch of the Possession collection.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The topaz rests in a heart-shaped bezel setting, which encircles the stone with a continuous gold band and protects its round cut all the way round. The tall, polished bezel extends down into the body of the ring, its tip blending into the top of the band. When worn on the finger, the outer profile of the ring features an identical tip, redefining the heart shape right down to its base. The wide, domed band is mirror-polished on all sides, with no surrounding stones, to allow the colour to take centre stage. The large facets of the heart-shaped cut reflect the light in broad swathes of blue.
Why choose this second-hand ring
A topaz of this size, set in a closed setting within a solid gold Piaget ring, requires a process of casting, setting and polishing that a second-hand piece allows you to acquire without the cost of a new creation. This 1990s model is no longer featured in the House’s catalogue and is now only available second-hand. With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, the topaz withstands regular wear well, particularly as the bezel setting protects its edges from knocks. The signature and year of manufacture engraved on the inside of the band attest to the piece’s origin.
