The history of this Piaget Altiplano
The House of Piaget has built a major part of its identity around finesse. As early as 1957, with the calibre 9P, it imposed a different approach to the dress watch, less demonstrative, more architectural, where thickness became a territory of mastery. This Piaget Altiplano reference 50930 is part of this heritage, with a square format in yellow gold that translates ultra-flatness into a more graphic interpretation. The anecdote is interesting, as the name Altiplano refers to the Andean high plateau, an image of pure, horizontal surface that Piaget associates with the sobriety of its thinnest cases.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Altiplano
The square case in 18k yellow gold measures 30 x 30 mm and features a very flat architecture, extended by 4 straight lugs that allow the bracelet to breathe. The solid caseback, screwed in with 8 screws, bears the Piaget engravings, with a satin finish and geometric decorations. The Plexiglas crystal protects a clear dial with champagne highlights, punctuated by large stylised Arabic numerals and 2 gilded hands. The square bezel is set with diamonds arranged in a continuous line around the dial. The 690P quartz calibre powers only the hours and minutes, with no additional complications. The watch is mounted on a white reptile-grain bracelet, finished with a Piaget-signed pin buckle.
Why this Piaget watch
This Piaget watch attracts with its balance between watchmaking jewellery and understated luxury watch. The square format, less common than the round cases in the collection, gives this Altiplano a more designed, almost jewellery-like presence, without losing the restraint characteristic of the House. On occasion, it offers a coherent gateway into the Piaget universe in gold, with a strong visual signature, a reliable quartz movement and an aesthetic that speaks as much to lovers of dress watches as to customers sensitive to set pieces.
