The history of this Panerai Radiomir
Panerai has its roots in the design of military instruments. The Radiomir Black Seal Logo PAM00380 model pays direct homage to the Italian Navy’s underwater commandos. During the Second World War, these combat swimmers operated in the dark whilst riding slow-moving torpedoes. To carry out their missions, they required highly reliable measuring instruments that could be read in murky waters. The design of this watch, with its cushion-shaped case and detachable wire lugs, is a direct legacy of these maritime requirements. This model embodies the manufacture’s original spirit whilst adapting to contemporary standards of fine watchmaking.
Case, movement and strap of this Radiomir
The 45 mm case is crafted from stainless steel with a fully polished finish. Its classic cushion-shaped design frames a deep black dial with a matt finish. The hours are marked by Arabic numerals and painted hour-markers coated with pale green luminescent material. The dial features a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and the logo with opposing arrows printed above the numeral 6. A crystal protects this display. The watch is powered by the Panerai OP II hand-wound calibre, certified as a chronometer by the COSC. This movement, comprising 17 jewels, offers a power reserve of 41 hours and beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. It is water-resistant to 100 metres. The watch is fitted with a supple black leather strap with tone-on-tone topstitching, fastened by a steel pin buckle.
Why this Panerai watch
This design remains true to the brand’s origins. Now discontinued, it strikes a masterful balance between military heritage and the pleasure of daily manual winding. The presence of the historic logo on the dial signifies its place within this lineage. This model serves as an ideal introduction to the world of historic watches whilst maintaining a striking presence on the wrist.
