The history of this Panerai Luminor 1950
Panerai has its roots in the supply of precision instruments to the Italian Navy. The Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Ceramica Tuttonero PAM00438, unveiled in 2012, marks a technical breakthrough by featuring a case entirely crafted from matt black ceramic, from the case itself to the articulated links of the strap. The zirconium oxide used ensures extreme scratch resistance. To maintain absolute consistency with this understated aesthetic, the manufacturer chose to darken the bridges of its calibre, thereby creating a completely achromatic timepiece.
Case, movement and strap of this Tuttonero
The 44 mm cushion-shaped case features a sandblasted matt finish that absorbs light. The crown-protecting bridge, the brand’s architectural signature, ensures water resistance tested to 100 metres. The dial features a black sandwich structure, revealing beige luminescent material on the hour markers and hands. The dial layout centres on a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, a date window at 3 o’clock and a central hand indicating a second time zone. The case back, fitted with a smoked sapphire crystal, reveals the self-winding P.9001/B calibre. This movement, comprising 227 components, beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 72 hours. The integrated bracelet extends the lines of the case in the same black ceramic, secured by a DLC-coated titanium folding clasp.
Why this Panerai watch
This design stands out for its radical aesthetic. The Tuttonero offers a technical alternative to the usual leather or rubber strap versions, providing a seamless integration of materials with no visual disruption. The combination of a GMT complication and a 72-hour power reserve makes it a particularly practical travel companion. This model, now discontinued, is aimed at enthusiasts of contemporary materials seeking a timepiece that is both robust and understated on the wrist.
