The Art Deco style of this sapphire daisy ring
This second-hand sapphire daisy ring features a design that has been recognised worldwide since 1981, the year Lady Diana chose a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire from Garrard, set in white gold and surrounded by 14 diamonds. Here, a cushion-cut sapphire weighing approximately 1.10 carats, in a deep midnight blue, takes centre stage within a setting of round diamonds, also numbering 14. The 18-carat white gold setting echoes the scalloped outline and beaded edges of Art Deco-style rings. Set against a white background, the sapphire’s deep hue stands out clearly from a distance and creates a striking graphic accent on the hand.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The sapphire is set in a closed setting, a fine band of gold that encircles the entire stone and protects its edges. Surrounding it, each of the 14 round diamonds – totalling an estimated 0.20 carats – rests in its own closed setting edged with millegrain, that string of tiny gold beads which softens the metal’s sheen. Their rounded settings form the petals of a daisy. Beneath the head, the openwork setting with cross-hatching allows light to pass through from beneath the stones and lightens the silhouette. The smooth band tapers towards the shoulders to give the motif centre stage. Taller than it is wide, the ring head follows the line of the finger and elongates it.
Why choose this second-hand ring
A sapphire weighing over one carat, surrounded by diamonds in a beaded closed-set setting, requires long hours of workshop work, with each millegrain edge crafted by hand, stone by stone. This pre-owned piece offers access to this craftsmanship and the size of the central stone for a fraction of the price of a comparable new design. The sapphire, rated 9 on the Mohs scale – just behind the diamond – withstands regular wear well. Its midnight blue hue, more subdued than a vivid blue, is equally suited to daytime wear as it is to evening wear.
