The Girolata, a Mahina leather tote bag by Louis Vuitton
In 1896, Georges Vuitton designed the Monogram canvas as a tribute to his father, featuring his intertwined initials and stylised flowers. In 2007, Louis Vuitton adapted this motif for leather with the Mahina line, where the monogram is no longer printed but perforated. Launched in 2017, the Girolata features this leather in a tote bag with a drawstring closure that can be worn open or cinched into a bucket shape. This pre-owned bag, reference M54403, is crafted in the ‘Galet’ colourway – a light taupe on which the perforations form the motif with dark dots.
Materials, dimensions and finishes
The body is made from grained calfskin, perforated with the monogram across its entire surface. The two rolled handles, the drawstring and its loops are made from smooth calfskin in a deeper taupe shade, with beige topstitching and brown-tinted edges. The drawstring passes through three loops before meeting at a leather slider in the centre of the front panel. On the sides, two silver-coloured D-rings hold the removable leather shoulder strap with snap hooks. The bag measures approximately 30 cm at the base, 27 cm in height and 13 cm in depth. The interior is lined with brown microfibre, and a matching zipped pouch in Mahina leather is attached via a leather strap with a carabiner. When cinched with its strap, the Girolata takes on a bucket shape and can be carried by hand or over the shoulder.
Why this second-hand bag
The Girolata is no longer featured in the Louis Vuitton catalogue, and the second-hand market remains the only way to acquire this model. The size is perfect for a day’s essentials, whilst the zipped pouch keeps cards and keys separate. Purchased from the Louis Vuitton boutique in Geneva, this bag has a documented history.
Contents included and condition
The bag comes with its zipped pouch and tie, its leather shoulder strap, its dust bag, its purchase receipt dated July 2018 in its Louis Vuitton envelope, the Mahina booklet and the Maison’s composition card. It is in mint condition. The perforated leather, corners, handles and edges show no signs of wear, and the silver-coloured hardware has retained its original shine. On such light-coloured leather, no marks from rubbing or colour transfer have appeared.
