The history of this Jaeger-LeCoultre Étrier
Jaeger-LeCoultre boasts extensive archives, and the Étrier model holds a unique place in the brand’s history. First created in the 1930s, this design draws its inspiration directly from the world of horsemanship. Its rectangular case is extended by two large metal arches that mimic the shape of a traditional stirrup. This design enjoyed considerable success during the 1960s and 1970s amongst a clientele seeking asymmetrical lines. A notable anecdote from this period concerns Hermès. Captivated by the design of this case and drawing on its own heritage in saddlery, the French brand chose to stock this model in its Parisian boutiques. It is a watch designed to adorn the wrist with fluid geometry and an instantly recognisable visual identity.
Case, movement and strap of this Étrier
This timepiece features a solid yellow gold case measuring 23 mm in width. Its proportions lend it a discreet and balanced presence. The polished precious metal on the lugs and brushed finish on the back capture the light with understated elegance. The opaline silver dial features applied baton hour markers and two slender yellow gold sword-shaped hands for clear time-reading. To preserve the balance of the lines, the fluted winding crown is concealed at 6 o’clock within the empty space of the lower lug. The watch is powered by a hand-wound mechanical calibre produced by the historic manufacture. It is fitted with a black crocodile-effect leather strap featuring its original pin buckle bearing the interlaced letters ‘JL’. The leather shows significant signs of wear, and we recommend replacing it with a new strap to complement this piece.
Why this Jaeger-LeCoultre watch
Acquiring a vintage piece from the 1960s or 1970s allows you to own a piece of Swiss watchmaking history. This model catches the eye with its distinctive design and jewellery-style profile. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find these solid gold editions with their original, unrepainted dials and period buckles. It is an excellent choice for a collector who appreciates the geometry of a case with oversized lugs. The light, even patina attests to its authenticity and sets it apart from modern production. It strikes an interesting balance between the brand’s historical heritage and everyday wear.

You will notice numerous superficial micro-scratches on the polished yellow gold surfaces, evidence of regular wear over the decades. The dial retains a light colour with subtle signs of ageing. The leather strap is at the end of its useful life and will need to be replaced by you. Our partner watchmaker has carried out a full service of the internal mechanism to ensure it is in working order.
