The history of this Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duetto
The House of Jaeger-LeCoultre gave birth to the Reverso in 1931 in response to a very practical requirement of polo players in British India: to protect the glass during play by means of a case capable of turning over in its cradle. This Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duetto 266.5.44 takes up this Art Deco architecture and adds a more precious reading. The Duetto should not be confused with a Duoface. Here, the two faces are not used to display 2 distinct time zones, but to offer 2 aesthetic expressions of the same time, driven by the calibre 844.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Reverso Duetto
The rectangular case measures 21 mm wide, with a reversible construction in steel and 750 yellow gold. The front features a silver guilloché dial, black Arabic numerals, a rectangular minute track and sword-shaped blued hands. The reverse reveals a more elegant mother-of-pearl dial, framed by 2 lines of diamonds arranged on the horizontal parts of the case. The crystal is sapphire. The Calibre 844 is a hand-wound mechanical manufacture movement, dedicated to hours and minutes on both sides, without a second hand, with a power reserve of around 40 hours and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The two-tone bracelet in steel and 750 yellow gold naturally extends the design of the case with a signed folding clasp.
Why this Jaeger-LeCoultre watch
This Reverso Duetto is interesting on occasion because it brings together several sought-after codes in a discreet format. It retains the graphic rigour of the classic Reverso while adding a second mother-of-pearl and gem-set dial, which is rarer in everyday use. The result speaks to a clientele that wants a luxury second-hand watch that is identifiable, feminine and mechanically coherent, without tipping over into an overly demonstrative piece. The combination of steel and 750 yellow gold also brings a warmer presence than an all-steel version, while retaining the versatility of a metal bracelet.
