The history of this Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox
Launched in the early 1950s, the Memovox marked a technical milestone in the production of utility watches. The Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture designed this timepiece to meet the needs of the post-war businessman, who required a discreet reminder for his business appointments or when travelling. Charlie Chaplin opted for this model with its mechanical alarm mechanism and chose a solid gold version to wear every day. This historic timepiece exemplifies the Swiss Maison’s watchmaking expertise.
Case, movement and strap of this Memovox
The 36 mm round case is crafted from 750 gold and features teardrop-shaped lugs. The polished finish of the gold contrasts with the natural patina of the two-tone champagne dial. The central rotating disc, featuring a small arrow, allows the alarm function to be set. The sword-shaped hour markers and hands ensure easy time-reading. The watch is powered by the hand-wound P489/1 calibre. This mechanical movement, featuring 17 jewels, has a hammer that strikes a pin fixed to the case back to produce the alarm’s chime. Setting and winding are carried out via the two crowns on the right-hand side. A smooth black leather strap with a pin buckle completes this timepiece. The power reserve is 40 hours.
Why this Jaeger-LeCoultre watch
The first editions in 750 gold, featuring teardrop-shaped lugs, are attracting the interest of collectors. This design combines a classic aesthetic with a practical mechanical complication. On the current market, signs of wear and the vintage patina acquired over the decades are much-appreciated features that bear witness to the piece’s history. Acquiring this example with its unrepainted dial allows you to add a historic watch to your collection.
