The story behind this Hublot Big Bang Unico Golf
Unveiled in Shanghai in October 2017 alongside Dustin Johnson, then world number one, the Big Bang Unico Golf meets a specific need for golfers: keeping score without a scorecard or pencil. Hublot designed, produced and assembled a mechanical scoring module in-house, integrated with its Unico in-house movement. It utilises reset mechanisms – a solution commonly found in chronographs – to ensure the counters reset cleanly and reliably. The watch also echoes this design, with two pushers reminiscent of a golfer’s equipment: the 2 o’clock pusher shaped like a putter head and the 8 o’clock pusher shaped like a tee. The Big Bang Unico Golf Blue Carbon 416.YL.5120.VR is a limited edition of 200 pieces.
Case, calibre and strap of this Big Bang Unico Golf
The 45 mm case combines a black carbon fibre structure with a top layer of blue Texalium, a composite exclusive to Hublot that combines carbon fibre and aluminium. Its cross-weave pattern is reminiscent of denim, and this composite makes the watch feel light on the wrist. The bezel is secured by six H-shaped screws. The matt blue skeletonised dial reveals the counter discs. The window at 9 o’clock indicates the current hole, the one at 3 o’clock – set against a yellow background – shows the strokes played, and the double window at 6 o’clock displays the total over 18 holes. The SHOT push-button counts strokes, the HOLE push-button moves to the next hole, and the 8 o’clock push-button resets the display to zero. The hands, which are open-worked at their bases, and the applied hour markers are luminescent. The self-winding HUB1580 calibre offers a power reserve of 72 hours. The sapphire caseback reveals its open-worked oscillating weight and 43 jewels. It is water-resistant to 100 metres. The perforated navy blue calfskin strap, reminiscent of a golf glove, rests on a black rubber base and fastens with a folding clasp in black ceramic and blackened titanium.
Why this Hublot watch
The Big Bang Unico Golf Blue Carbon is no longer in production, and its limited run of 200 pieces makes it hard to come by. For a golfer, it offers a useful complication on the course. Its lightness means you hardly notice it whilst playing, and its open-worked dial, revealing the movement, means it can be worn beyond the green. Offered with all its original accessories, it remains a cohesive piece for a collector of the brand.
Contents and condition
It is supplied as a full set, with its presentation box, its outer box, its numbered certificate of authenticity signed by Ricardo Guadalupe and Jean-Claude Biver, its electronic warranty card and its warranty card dated August 2019. The box also includes a second technical fabric strap with a Velcro fastening, 3 golf balls, 3 wooden tees in their leather case and a microfibre cloth still in its packaging. The watch is in very good condition. The crystal shows no visible scratches and the Texalium pattern remains clear on both the bezel and the case. The counting and reset functions are operational.
