The Chaîne d’ancre Enchaînée, a marine chain transformed into a bangle
In 1937, Robert Dumas observed the boats moored along the Normandy coast and noticed their anchor chains. Hermès created its first silver bracelet based on this design as early as 1938, and this link with a central bar has since been continuously reinterpreted in other forms and materials. With the Chaîne d’ancre Enchaînée, the House has moved away from the flexibility of the chain and transformed its links into a rigid, open bangle. This pre-owned piece is the medium-sized model in the range, crafted from 925 sterling silver and in size LG, with the reference H109509B 00LG.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The bangle alternates between nautical links, recognisable by their crossbar, and simple oval links that connect them. Measuring 9.5 mm wide, they form a uniform line all the way round the bracelet. At both ends, the chain finishes with a flattened oval plate, open-worked with the same nautical motif, which frames the opening of the bangle. The silver is polished to a high shine on all sides, including the interior. With no clasp or hinge, the bracelet is slipped onto the wrist through its opening. The engraving on the inside states that it was made in Italy for the House.
Why choose this second-hand bracelet
Opting for this pre-owned model gives you access to a Hermès creation in 925 sterling silver, complete with its original box and pouch. The Chaîne d’ancre design, which has remained essentially unchanged since 1938, is timeless and can be worn on its own or paired with a watch or other bangles. The LG size is suitable for a wide wrist. Finally, silver offers a practical advantage for jewellery worn regularly, as it can be repolished, giving you the choice between its current patina and its original polished finish.
Contents and condition
The inside of the plates bears the HERMÈS signature, the ‘Made in Italy’ mark, the size LG and the 925 hallmark. The bangle shows fine scratches and signs of wear on the front links, as well as a slight patina on the silver, with no deformation or damaged links. A refurbishment by our jeweller can restore it to its original polish, upon request at the time of purchase. The bracelet comes with its orange Hermès box and a brown pouch bearing the Hermès Paris logo.
