The Hermès Chaîne d’ancre, extra-large model
In 1937, Robert Dumas observed the boats moored along the Normandy coast and sketched the link that would become the Chaîne d’ancre. The first silver bracelet was created by Hermès in 1938, and the House has continued to reinterpret this motif ever since, in both silver and gold. This pre-owned piece is the extra-large version, reference H101995B, the widest of the five link sizes offered by Hermès. Crafted from 925/1000 silver, it comprises 12 links and measures 22 cm in length, with each link measuring 23.7 mm long by 14 mm wide.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The chain alternates between oval links with a central crossbar – modelled on nautical chains – and smooth oval links that connect them. The thick, round-section silver wire gives the bracelet a substantial presence and a noticeable weight on the wrist. The clasp follows the model’s signature design: a cylindrical rod mounted on a central ring, which slides into the end ring and then is positioned across it to secure the chain. With no spring or mechanism, this clasp is held in place solely by the geometry of the components. The silver is polished throughout the entire chain.
Why choose this pre-owned bracelet
Hermès offers the Chaîne d’ancre in various link counts, and this 12-link version is suitable for a wide wrist or a looser fit, with the bracelet sliding slightly towards the hand. Choosing this model second-hand allows you to acquire a solid silver piece bearing the House’s signature at a lower cost than a new one, in a pre-made length. Furthermore, this metal can be polished to maintain its lustre over the years.
Contents and condition
The bracelet shows normal signs of wear, with scratches and small marks scattered across the links, the bar and the ring. Upon request at the time of sale, our jeweller can polish it to restore the silver’s lustre and reduce superficial scratches. Deeper marks will remain visible after polishing, as silver never returns to its original condition. The bracelet is supplied in its orange Hermès box, lined with brown fabric and inscribed on the lid with the historic address of 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris.
