The story behind this Girard-Perregaux 1966
The 1966 collection from the La Chaux-de-Fonds-based manufacture pays direct homage to a pivotal year in precision watchmaking. That year saw the launch of the high-frequency Gyromatic movement, a technical breakthrough recognised with the Neuchâtel Observatory Centenary Prize. The chronograph model, reference 49539-53-151-BK6A, follows in this tradition by offering a visual balance inspired by classic pocket watches. The brand has designed this timepiece to meet the expectations of enthusiasts seeking clear legibility combined with a discreet presence on the wrist.
Case, movement and strap of this 1966 Chronograph
The round case, measuring 40 mm in diameter, is crafted from 18-carat white gold. Its design features clean lines and a smooth bezel sloping towards a domed sapphire crystal. The silver opaline dial features two recessed sub-dials for the chronograph function and a tachymeter scale around the periphery. Leaf-style hands indicate the hours and minutes, whilst those dedicated to the sports functions are distinguished by a blued steel finish. On the back, a sapphire crystal reveals the self-winding GP030C0 calibre. This movement, comprising over 300 components and 38 jewels, beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 36 hours. A solid gold oscillating weight, adorned with fine parallel stripes, drives the mechanism. The watch is fitted with a black alligator leather strap fastened with an 18-carat white gold pin buckle. The watch is water-resistant to 30 metres.
Why this Girard-Perregaux watch
The choice of white gold offers a distinct appeal, as this metal possesses the cool lustre of steel whilst lending a sense of substance to the wrist. This timepiece represents an interesting option on the second-hand market for enthusiasts of bi-compax chronographs. Its dressy appearance allows the wearer to enjoy a sporty complication in a formal setting. The contrast between the light-coloured dial and the bluish accents of the hands adds a touch of colour to this monochrome ensemble. This model catches the eye with its proportions and its movement, crafted by a manufacture renowned for its independence.
