Gilbert Albert’s organic signature
The Geneva-based jeweller Gilbert Albert left his mark on 20th-century design by drawing inspiration from the raw textures of nature. The inventor of the crinkled gold finish, he introduced functional modularity with his system of interchangeable spheres. This second-hand 18-carat yellow gold necklace exemplifies this approach. At its centre sits a removable Lapis Lazuli bead weighing approximately 16 carats, whose opaque blue hue contrasts with the metal’s sheen.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The structure of this piece is based on an asymmetrical sequence of elongated links. The setting drapes heavily against the skin. The central element takes the form of a flared cradle designed to hold the 16-carat gemstone securely in place without prongs. The yellow metal features a textured surface where the polished edges catch the light whilst the recesses create sharp shadows. The fastening system allows the stone to be removed and replaced with a simple press.
