Gilbert Albert’s modular design
In the 1960s, the Geneva-based jeweller Gilbert Albert introduced designs directly inspired by nature and developed interchangeable systems. This pair of second-hand earrings exemplifies this modular approach. The 18-carat yellow gold setting features two opaque green jadeite spheres cut as integral cabochons. The delicately speckled green hue contrasts with the textured metal to create a sculptural look.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The asymmetrical open-ring structure features a polished, grainy finish reminiscent of raw gold. The pivot-opening mechanism, located at the bottom, allows the base of the ring to be spread apart. The mineral sphere is held in place by simple mechanical compression, thereby eliminating the need for traditional prongs. The volume of the setting is balanced by a hollowed-out internal structure, ensuring the piece is lightweight when worn.

The inside of the clasp bears the 750 hallmark confirming the alloy, as well as partial engravings from the manufacturer.
