The history of this Ebel Sport Classic
Ebel marked a turning point in watch design in the late 1970s with the creation of the Sport Classic range. Born out of a desire to combine the robustness of steel with the elegance of gold, this watch stands out for its innovative design. The story behind this model lies in the design of its bracelet. Its integration into the hexagonal case was technically engineered to mimic the drape of fabric against the skin, defying the natural rigidity of the metal. This aesthetic choice redefined the chic sports watch. Reference 1090141 embodies this philosophy, offering precise geometric harmony.
Case, movement and strap of this Sport Classic
The 36 mm case is crafted from stainless steel with a matt brushed finish. It is crowned by an 18-carat solid yellow gold bezel, secured by five visible screws that emphasise its hexagonal profile. The mother-of-pearl dial catches the light to reveal shifting reflections, structured by applied Roman numerals in gold. Powered by an Ebel quartz calibre, the watch dispenses with a seconds hand to offer a serene reading of the time. This movement ensures an ultra-slim profile. The two-tone bracelet, with its polished, gold-toned wavy links, blends seamlessly with the case. It fastens with a concealed butterfly clasp. The original water resistance is rated at 50 metres.
Why this Ebel watch
Acquiring a piece from the 1990s in this two-tone configuration offers an interesting take on the collection. The 36 mm diameter corresponded to the men’s standard of the time and is now established as a unisex size. The inclusion of a mother-of-pearl dial in this format remains a rare feature, offering a natural transition between a watch and a piece of jewellery. On the current market, this model offers access to a recognisable design, combining precious metals with a historic aesthetic.
