The origins of the Menottes dinh van
In 1976, Jean Dinh Van – who trained at Cartier under Jeanne Toussaint before founding his own fashion house in 1965 – designed a clasp inspired by a flat key. This mechanism gave rise to the dinh van Handcuffs, which have become the brand’s signature motif and a symbol of a chosen bond, whether of love or friendship. These dinh van earrings reinterpret the design as studs, crafted in 18-carat rose gold and set with a brilliant-cut white diamond on each cuff, totalling 0.01 carats. This is the R7.5 model, reference 867315, offered here as a pre-owned piece.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each handcuff measures 9.8 mm high by 8 mm wide. The design features the brand’s signature cuff with its open ring, slanted slit and flat head bearing the engraved ‘dinh van’ signature. The diamond is set flush within the metal, just above the engraving, flush with the surface. All facets are mirror-polished and the edges remain sharp. At the back, the post is secured by an 18-carat rose gold Alpa clasp – a domed disc with serrated edges that keeps the earring flat against the earlobe. When worn, the 8 mm stud sits flush against the ear; the polished rose gold takes on a warm glow, and the diamond, set at the tip, catches a fleeting sparkle with every movement of the head.
Why choose these second-hand stud earrings
dinh van’s ‘Menottes’ have been worn for 50 years without any change to their design – a motif that is instantly recognisable. This second-hand pair offers the House’s signature style and 18-carat gold at a more affordable price than in-store, with a refurbished polish. Their understated design can be worn on its own, layered with other studs, or paired with a rose gold Menottes bracelet to create a cohesive set.
