The contrast between black and grey at Damiani
These Damiani earrings in 18-carat white gold bring together the two materials that the Valenza-based House, founded in 1924, works with most consistently: diamonds and pearls. Each pendant begins with a brilliant-cut black diamond and descends to an 11 mm round Tahitian cultured pearl, with a deep grey hue interspersed with green and blue highlights. This colour comes from the mother-of-pearl of the Pinctada margaritifera, the black-lipped pearl oyster cultivated in the lagoons of French Polynesia. A pre-owned signed piece, the pair totals 0.41 carats of diamonds, including 0.20 carats of black diamonds.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The black stone, set with four prongs, rests on the earlobe and supports the post. Hanging beneath it is a hinged chain of seven brilliant-cut white diamonds, each prong-set in its own link, totalling 0.21 carats for the pair. This link-by-link construction gives the pendant its flexibility. The chain follows the movement of the head and the pearl swings freely at its end, held in place by a white gold cap. The matt black of the top absorbs the light whilst the white diamonds reflect it in tiny flashes, a gradation that draws the eye towards the pearl’s centre. At the back, a flower-shaped tab keeps each pendant securely in place.
Why choose these second-hand earrings
A Tahitian pearl of this diameter, perfectly round and with a clear lustre, remains expensive, and the Damiani signature adds the craftsmanship of a Valenza workshop. This model no longer appears in the brand’s current catalogue. Choosing it second-hand allows you to acquire designer drop earrings, featuring 16 individually set diamonds and two pearls of the same shade, for a fraction of the price of a new piece of jewellery of the same calibre. Worn on their own, they are enough to dress up a simple outfit, with the dark pearl standing out against a white shirt or a black collar.
