The story behind this Claude Meylan Millésime
Claude Meylan, based in the Vallée de Joux, offers a unique technical approach to timekeeping with its Millésime collection. The 6051 SAM B model exemplifies the fusion of precision mechanics and artisanal glasswork. To design this unusual dial, the brand collaborated with master glassmakers Frédéric and Samuel Taddéï. The technique employed involves fusing glass at extremely high temperatures. By manipulating thermal shocks and incorporating oxides, the artisans trap air bubbles and bluish pigments within the translucent material. Watchmaking traditionally seeks to control its environment with mathematical rigour, but this piece deliberately incorporates an element of randomness inherent in the material’s behaviour when heated. This process ensures that no two dials produced will be strictly identical.
Case, movement and strap of this Millésime
The watch’s design is centred on a 42 mm round case crafted from stainless steel. The fully polished finish provides a smooth surface that frames the glass disc without visually overwhelming it. The dial reveals a bluish matrix dotted with frozen oxygen bubbles. The time display is off-centre to the right of the case, set within a metal-rimmed sub-dial. This sub-dial features a flower-shaped openwork cut-out, offering a glimpse of the underlying movement. It is adorned with two blued skeletonised hands and a slender central seconds hand. A date window discreetly displays the date at 3 o’clock. The movement powering this assembly is the ETA 2671 calibre. This self-winding mechanical movement, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, offers a power reserve of 38 hours and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. A light blue leather strap with a scale pattern, fastened with a pin buckle, secures the watch to the wrist.
Why choose this Claude Meylan watch
The Millésime model is aimed at connoisseurs of the fine arts seeking an aesthetic that breaks away from the classic codes of fine watchmaking. The main appeal of this model lies in the uniqueness of its production. The thermal reaction of the glass precludes any visual standardisation during manufacture. The owner thus possesses a configuration that is strictly unique to them, whilst benefiting from the reliability of a recognised Swiss mechanical movement. The openwork floral motif on the hour ring adds an architectural dimension to this blue version, offering a carefully considered technical contrast to the organic, raw appearance of the glass caseback.
