The story behind this Claude Meylan Millésime
Claude Meylan, based in the Vallée de Joux, offers a unique technical approach to time display with the 6051 SAM R model. The Millésime collection is the result of a collaboration with master glassmakers Frédéric and Samuel Taddéï, driven by a desire to integrate a complex and unpredictable material into the heart of a rigorous mechanical architecture. The design of this dial is based on the technique of high-temperature glass fusing. By controlling the metal oxides and cooling curves, the artisans create variations in colour and air inclusions. Historically, watchmaking has always sought to control its environment; this model takes the opposite approach by harnessing a natural physical reaction, thereby making each piece strictly unique in its final appearance.
Case, movement and strap of this Millésime
The design of this timepiece centres on a 42 mm round case crafted from stainless steel. Its fully polished finish offers a continuous mirror-like surface, designed not to interfere with the readability of the dial. The dial consists of a translucent glass disc incorporating red, orange and blue pigments. The hour display is off-centre at 3 o’clock on a grey sub-dial with a finely sandblasted texture, traversed by two skeletonised, blued sword-shaped hands and a central seconds hand. This off-centre arrangement is made possible by the incorporation of the ETA 2671 calibre. This self-winding mechanical movement, visible through the sapphire crystal case back, beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 38 hours. It features traditional finishes, with circular graining on the bridges and Côtes de Genève on the oscillating weight. The watch is secured on the wrist by a matt black leather strap, enhanced with blue topstitching, which fastens with a steel pin buckle.
Why this Claude Meylan watch
In the collectors’ market, interest in the Millésime range stems from the guaranteed uniqueness of each piece. The thermal process used to create the dial precludes any identical mass-produced items. The buyer thus acquires a design that is unique to them, whilst benefiting from the reliability of a tried-and-tested Swiss movement. This piece is aimed at collectors who appreciate rare artistic crafts, where horological precision shapes the raw character of the material worked by fire.
