The story behind this Hermès Les Voitures Nouvelles scarf
The House of Hermès unveiled this creation in 1961 under the skillful stroke of Jacques Eudel, one of the manufacture's most prolific illustrators. Through the motif Les Voitures Nouvelles, bearing the reference Vintage-Hermes-90, the artist documents a fascinating period of transition: the heyday of horse-drawn carriages in the 19th century, just before the advent of the automobile. Inspired by the prestigious catalogues of Parisian coachbuilders of the time, Eudel designs coupés, cabriolets and phaetons with the precision of an engineer. It's a direct tribute to the roots of Thierry Hermès, whose harnesses fitted precisely these exceptional cars.
Fabric, printing and finishes of this Les Voitures Nouvelles
The architecture of this silk is established on a 90 cm square format. Woven in pure silk twill, the scarf has an elegant matt finish and a perfectly structured fall. The originality of this composition lies in its background: a geometric tartan pattern in red and blue, on which rest fine strips of light grey leather. In the centre and at each of the 4 corners are the famous detailed horse-drawn carriages. The outline is framed by a wide white border, delicately closed by the hem rolled to the right, hand-stitched by the manufacture's seamstresses.
Why this Hermès scarf
The unexpected combination of a rigorous tartan pattern with the curved lines of horse-drawn engineering gives this piece a very singular British charm. The red and blue tartan background offers a graphic modernity that contrasts with the brand's more classic floral compositions. This geometric aesthetic makes it extremely easy to wear every day: tied as a tie or a point, it reveals particularly elegant interplays of stripes on a plain coat or structured blazer.
Delivered contents and condition
This great classic is supplied on its own. Preserved with remarkable care, the silk retains its original thickness and shape memory. The colours printed on the flat frame, particularly the red and royal blue of the tartan, have lost none of their vibrant saturation. The hand-crafted roulotté has a clean cylindrical volume all the way round. Micro marks of folding can be distinguished under direct lighting, confirming its lived experience while validating its excellent conservation.
