The story behind this Bvlgari Bvlgari
Bvlgari has created a landmark in contemporary watchmaking. Designed by Gérald Genta, the collection draws its inspiration from the brand’s Roman roots. In 1975, the founding concept centred on the engraved bezel, an aesthetic approach modelled on ancient coins where the emperor’s name surrounded his portrait. In response to demand, production was officially opened to the public in 1977. The BB 23 GL model is part of this rich heritage. It transforms the brand name – traditionally confined to the dial – into a central structural element, resulting in a watch with a minimalist design that broke with the conventions of its time.
Case, movement and strap of this Bvlgari Bvlgari
The cylindrical case measures 23 mm in diameter and is crafted from 18-carat yellow gold. Its shape is emphasised by straight lugs in the form of cylindrical rods, connecting the strap to the main case. The flat bezel forms the crown of the case, bearing the collection’s double circular engraving. The matt black dial offers a smooth surface that creates a sharp contrast with the warmth of the metal. The hours are marked by slender baton hour-markers and applied Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock. The time is indicated by solid yellow gold hands. A flat sapphire crystal protects the dial. A smooth, flat crown allows for adjustment. The solid caseback features a circular brushed finish and bears the identifying engravings. The watch is powered by a Swiss quartz movement, ensuring high precision. A brown textured leather strap, fastened with an original 18-carat yellow gold pin buckle, completes the look.
Why this Bvlgari watch
The 23 mm diameter offers a discreet presence on the wrist, ideal for everyday wear whilst asserting a recognisable visual identity. The combination of yellow gold and a black dial remains an aesthetic balance sought after by connoisseurs with an eye for the right proportions. Today, it represents an opportunity to acquire an architectural signature piece on the pre-owned market. This discontinued model retains strong stylistic relevance thanks to the precision of its geometric lines.
