The history of this Breitling Superocean Heritage
Breitling launched the Superocean in 1957, a diving watch that opened up the underwater world to the brand, which until then had focused on aviation. In 2007, to mark the model’s 50th anniversary, the Superocean Heritage captured its spirit with its arrow-shaped hour hand and rotating bezel. The second generation, unveiled at Baselworld in 2017, replaced the bezel insert with a ceramic ring and refined both the hands and the case. The Superocean Heritage B20 Automatic 44, reference AB2030121B1S1, joined the collection in 2018, with a 44 mm diameter that sits between the earlier 42 mm and 46 mm versions. Its movement was the result of a collaboration between Breitling and Tudor. The brand supplied its B01 chronograph movement to Tudor, which in return provided its MT5612 calibre, adapted and renamed the B20 by Breitling.
Case, calibre and strap of this Superocean Heritage
The polished steel case measures 44 mm in diameter and 14.55 mm in thickness, with 22 mm between the lugs and a screw-down caseback engraved with ‘Chronometre Superocean Edition Speciale’. The unidirectional ratchet bezel features a polished black ceramic ring, and the double-sealed screw-down crown, bearing the brand’s ‘B’ logo, guarantees water resistance to 200 m. The domed sapphire crystal is treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The black dial features applied, polished baton hour markers, a double hour marker at 12 o’clock, luminescent dots and a date window at 6 o’clock. The arrow-shaped hour hand and sword-shaped minute hand are filled with luminescent material for clear readability in the dark. Inside, the self-winding Manufacture Calibre B20 is COSC-certified as a chronometer. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, features 26 jewels and offers a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. The black rubber strap with a braided pattern fastens with a Breitling-signed steel folding clasp with pushers.
Why this Breitling watch
The Superocean Heritage is aimed at those seeking a diving watch with a design inspired by the 1950s, without compromising on a modern, chronometer-certified movement. Its power reserve of approximately 70 hours covers an entire weekend. Set on Friday evening, it will still be showing the correct time on Monday morning. The ceramic bezel ring is more scratch-resistant than an aluminium insert and retains its deep black colour over time. The rubber strap can be rinsed off after a swim, and the date at 6 o’clock preserves the symmetry of the dial. The 44 mm diameter ensures the time is immediately legible, with large hands and hour markers.
