The story behind this Breitling Chronomat
The Chronomat has its roots on the tarmac. In 1983, the Italian aerobatic team, the Frecce Tricolori, set the manufacturer a challenge, asking it to design a mechanical chronograph capable of withstanding the rigours of the cockpit whilst remaining legible and easy to operate whilst wearing flight gloves. The response took the form of an ingenious technical innovation, featuring raised lugs on the bezel. This design protects the sapphire crystal from impacts with the cockpit instruments whilst offering optimal grip. Launched to the general public the following year, the collection reignited interest in mechanical chronographs at the height of the quartz era. This model, reference AB0134101C1S1, embodies the contemporary evolution of this aviation-inspired heritage.
Case, movement and strap of this Chronomat
Forged from a solid block of stainless steel, this timepiece has a diameter of 42 mm and a thickness of 15.1 mm. The blue sunburst dial captures light intensely and offers a striking visual contrast with the three azure-finished black sub-dials. This configuration is protected by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The transparent case back reveals the Calibre 01, featuring a column wheel and a vertical clutch. This self-winding mechanical movement, certified as a chronometer, offers a power reserve of 70 hours and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The watch is guaranteed to be water-resistant to 200 metres. It is secured on the wrist by a textured blue rubber strap featuring the iconic ‘Rouleaux’ geometric pattern, fastened with a steel folding clasp.
