The history of this Breguet Marine GMT
In 1815, Abraham-Louis Breguet was awarded the title of Watchmaker to the Royal Navy, which tasked him with supplying the French fleet with chronometers capable of maintaining a regular rate at sea. The Maison has retained this heritage in its Marine collection and still engraves it on the back of its watches, as on this model. Introduced in 2012, the Breguet Marine GMT meets the traveller’s need to see at a glance both the time at their current location and that at their home port. Our example bears the reference 5857BR/Z2/5ZU, the 18-carat rose gold version on a rubber strap. Breguet has opted for an unusual design for a second time zone. The central hands indicate the local time, whilst the reference time and date are displayed on an off-centre sub-dial at 6 o’clock, ensuring that the home time is never confused with the travel time.
Case, movement and strap of this Marine GMT
The 42 mm 18-carat rose gold case reflects the collection’s signature design, with a fluted middle section, screw-fixed lugs and a crown bearing the Breguet ‘B’ emblem, flanked by two crown guards. The dial is hand-guilloché. Its dark grey centre features a wave motif, surrounded by a silver-coloured ring with rose gold-tone applied Roman numerals. The sub-dial at 6 o’clock, featuring Breguet Arabic numerals, combines the reference hour and the date window, whilst a 24-hour indicator at 2 o’clock distinguishes between day and night. The hollowed-out apple-shaped hands, finished in rose gold, are fitted with luminescent dots and complemented by a central seconds hand. The sapphire crystal case back reveals the self-winding Calibre 517F, with its guilloché oscillating weight and silicon balance spring. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour on 28 jewels and offers a 72-hour power reserve. It is water-resistant to 100 metres. The black rubber strap, featuring a ‘clous de Paris’ embossed pattern and bearing the Breguet signature, fastens with a rose gold folding clasp and slips through two loops in the same gold.
Why this Breguet watch
The Marine GMT is designed for those who divide their time between two time zones and expect clear readability from a maison of fine watchmaking. The black rubber withstands water and perspiration better than leather, and the 100-metre water resistance allows for swimming. The hand-guilloché dial links this travel watch to Breguet’s classic craftsmanship. On the second-hand market, this model offers the chance to own a rose gold Marine GMT featuring the Calibre 517F, complete with a full set of accessories, without having to wait for an in-store order; the spare strap means you won’t have to hunt for an original replacement when the first one wears out.
Contents and condition
The watch is supplied with its Breguet burl wood case, its outer box and its certificate of origin and warranty, issued in July 2013 by an authorised dealer. A second black rubber strap, identical to the one currently fitted, completes the set. Having been worn, it shows slight signs of external wear, with no significant flaws on the case, clasp or straps. The winding mechanism, second time zone, date and day/night indicator have been checked and are in working order.
