The history of this Audemars Piguet Calendar 2100
This Audemars Piguet Calendar 2100 desk clock brings to the desk the complication that the Manufacture in Le Brassus brought back into the spotlight in the late 1970s with its ultra-thin perpetual calendars. The mechanism follows a 48-month cycle that takes into account the length of each month and leap years, requiring no adjustment until 2100. In that year, the Gregorian calendar removes 29 February from common years not divisible by 400, and the table clock will require a one-day correction for the first time. Produced by Audemars Piguet at the end of the 20th century, the Calendar 2100 is also available in an octagonal version inspired by the Royal Oak. This round version in gold-plated brass features more classic lines. It does not display the time. It is a perpetual desk calendar, designed to complement a watch rather than replace it.
Case, mechanism and base of this Calendar 2100
The round, gold-plated brass case, approximately 14 cm tall including its base, is encircled by a fully polished stepped bezel. The brushed case back, secured by four screws, features three slotted adjusters used to set the calendar. The white dial displays four different indications. At 12 o’clock, a counter combines the months and the four-year cycle, with the inscriptions ‘LEAP YEAR’, ‘1st YEAR’, ‘2nd YEAR’ and ‘3rd YEAR’. The days of the week in English are displayed at 9 o’clock, the date at 3 o’clock, and the moon phases are shown at 6 o’clock in a scalloped aperture, on a blue disc studded with golden stars. The mechanism does not require winding. A single pusher at 12 o’clock advances all the displays by one day. A single press each day is sufficient; if the watch is left unused for two days, simply press the pusher twice. The rectangular, three-tiered base alternates between a brushed top and polished chamfers, which reflect the light from the desk lamp in fine lines.
Why this Audemars Piguet table clock
The Calendar 2100 offers access to one of the Manufacture’s historic complications in a form no longer found in its catalogue. The perpetual calendar is clearly visible from a distance, and its operation is intuitive. For an Audemars Piguet enthusiast, this table clock extends the collection onto the desk, alongside a perpetual calendar on the wrist or in its place. Its compact size fits just as well on a desk as on a bookshelf.
Contents and condition
The table clock is supplied in its original Audemars Piguet presentation box, lined in brown, with a velvety beige interior and a snap-fastening clasp, bearing the Maison’s signature in gold lettering on a brown plaque. It is in very good condition. The gilded brass retains an even lustre, with no visible marks on the bezel, caseback or base, and the dial is crisp. The calendar has been tested and the pusher advances the day, date, month and moon phase. The presentation box shows slight signs of wear on the inside, consistent with its age. No paperwork or instruction leaflet accompanies the clock.
