A diamond solitaire shaped like a rock
This 750 yellow gold diamond solitaire draws on the stylistic elements of organic jewellery from the late 1960s, when jewellers moved away from smooth surfaces in favour of molten gold, textured and open-worked to resemble volcanic rock. At the top, a round brilliant-cut diamond of approximately 1.50 carats, with a slightly warm hue, rises above a dome of textured metal. This shade complements the yellow gold rather than contrasting with it, so that the metal appears to be an extension of the stone. Unsigned, this brutalist ring is more a product of the workshop’s signature style than of a catalogue – a second-hand piece of jewellery you wouldn’t come across in a shop window.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The central diamond is held by six prongs, set on a bezel whose base blends into the gold mesh. Surrounding it, 11 round brilliant-cut diamonds, each weighing approximately 0.10 carats – totalling nearly 1.10 carats – are prong-set within the dome’s recesses, scattered asymmetrically like drops trapped in the metal. The body is openwork from the top down to the band, alternating between polished reliefs and striated surfaces, which reflect light from multiple angles. This volume gives the ring a striking presence on the hand, whilst the openwork allows light to pass through to the skin. The total carat weight of the stones is approximately 2.60 carats.
Why choose this second-hand ring
Reproducing textured, openwork gold across the entire surface today requires long hours in the workshop, which significantly drive up the price of a new creation. A pre-owned piece offers a central diamond of approximately 1.50 carats and 11 accent stones for a fraction of that cost. It is also a choice of a yellow gold solitaire ring that departs from the classic solitaire on a smooth band, with a design that is instantly recognisable.
