The diamond setting on these yellow gold earrings
The flush-set style became widespread in the late 19th century, initially on men’s rings, because a stone set flush with the metal does not catch on anything and is relatively resistant to impact. These 18-carat yellow gold earrings apply this principle to a flat surface. On each side, eight brilliant-cut diamonds of varying diameters are arranged in a loose cluster pattern, with an estimated total weight of 0.43 carats for the pair. Unsigned, this pre-owned piece bears the 750 hallmark and a master’s mark. The two sides do not feature exactly the same design, giving the pair an irregular rhythm.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each earring measures 16.5 mm high by 8 mm wide. The gold is bent into a U-shape around the earlobe, with a slightly trapezoidal front and a back of the same shape. The visible side is brushed gold, with a fine, even grain; the back and interior are polished. Each diamond is set flush with the metal in a recess carved from the solid block, its table level with the gold. A pin fixed to the inside of the front panel passes through the earlobe, then through the back – which is hinged on a pin – before rising to lock it into place. When worn, the brushed surfaces remain matt, allowing only the 16 stones to sparkle. The setting is solid, with a substantial feel in the hand.
Why these second-hand earrings
A solid gold setting, bent, brushed and then set stone by stone, represents significant workshop craftsmanship, which the second-hand market makes considerably more affordable. The flush-set stones have no prongs that might snag a scarf or collar, making these earrings easy to wear every day. The geometric design, with no visible logo, complements a yellow gold watch just as well as more classic jewellery, and the asymmetry of the two stone settings prevents the set from looking too staid.
