The closed-set diamond, the oldest method of setting a diamond
Long before prong settings became widespread in the late 19th century, jewellers were already setting their stones within a metal collar folded down all the way round the bezel. These diamond stud earrings draw on this principle – the closed setting – in a round, domed design crafted from 18-carat white gold. Each piece features a brilliant-cut diamond, appearing white to the eye, with an estimated total weight of approximately 0.40 ct for the pair. Unsigned, this pre-owned piece is a fine example of classic jewellery.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each stud forms a mirror-polished dome 7.8 mm in diameter, set upon a second step that creates a slight protrusion along the edge. At the centre, the diamond is set in a bezel carved directly from the metal, without any prongs that might snag a jumper. On the reverse, the setting is openwork to allow light to reach the back of the stone. The setting is solid and substantial, with a real sense of gold’s weight under the fingers. The grooved stem features a white gold butterfly clasp with a scalloped edge, whose two wings hold the stud firmly against the earlobe. Viewed from the front, the polished gold frames the diamond with a wide ring of light, and the stud stands out clearly, even with hair down.
Why choose these second-hand stud earrings
Among diamond earrings, the solitaire stud can be worn from morning to night and with any outfit. The closed setting protects the stone from knocks and has no prongs to worry about, making it a worry-free choice for everyday wear. In a brand-new design, such a quantity of gold and the craftsmanship of the setting drive up the price significantly. Second-hand, these stud earrings offer the same construction and two diamonds of the same size for a fraction of the cost, with no production lead time.
