A closed-set diamond solitaire
The closed setting is one of the oldest techniques in jewellery-making. Already used on Roman rings, it holds the stone within a continuous metal wall, long before the 6-prong setting introduced by Tiffany in 1886 popularised the raised solitaire. This second-hand diamond solitaire follows this principle, featuring a brilliant-cut diamond estimated at 0.29 carats, set within an 18-carat yellow gold bezel that protects its girdle. The metal, hallmarked 750, forms a polished band whose shoulders cross on either side of the stone. The 20 diamonds adorning them bring the total weight to approximately 0.39 carats.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The setting rests on an asymmetrical cross. On one side, a smooth yellow gold band runs over the pavé setting; on the other, it runs beneath it, with the bezel remaining at the centre. Each shoulder features a pavé of round diamonds arranged in two rows of five – that is, 20 stones totalling approximately 0.10 carats – set in a grain setting on a rhodium-plated yellow gold background. This background lightens the setting and sets the pavé apart from the polished gold surrounding it. Beneath the shoulders, openwork details lighten the structure and allow light to enter from behind the stones. The band, wider at the centre stone, gradually tapers towards the palm.
Why choose this second-hand solitaire
A solitaire with shoulders of this type requires a significant amount of workshop time. The grain-set arrangement of 20 stones and the fitting of a collar around the central diamond are the work of a gem-setter. When bought second-hand, it is already finished and inspected, without the cost of a brand-new creation. The closed setting protects the round diamond from knocks and has no prongs to snag the stitches of a jumper, making it a ring suitable for everyday wear. Its design remains understated, featuring a clear central stone framed by two bands of pavé, and it can be worn on its own or alongside a yellow gold wedding band.
