The history of this Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Tribute to Alaska Project
Introduced in 2017, this Omega celebrates the 5th anniversary of the #SpeedyTuesday movement, born within the international community of Speedmaster enthusiasts. This limited edition pays tribute to the legendary Speedmaster Alaska Project III from 1978, originally developed to meet the extreme requirements of space missions. Produced in only 2 012 pieces, this Speedmaster holds a unique place in Omega’s recent history, both for its historical inspiration and its exclusive online launch, now unavailable in the brand’s catalogue.
Case, calibre and bracelet
This Speedmaster features a 42 mm stainless steel case, water-resistant to 50 metres, paired with a black bezel with tachymeter scale and a domed Hesalite crystal bearing the Omega logo at its centre. The black “reverse panda” dial stands out with its three opaline silver sub-dials, luminescent indexes and hands, as well as its applied and rhodium-plated vintage Omega logo. The screw-down case back is engraved with “SPEEDY TUESDAY ANNIVERSARY – A TRIBUTE TO ALASKA PROJECT III”, the mention “RADIAL”, and the individual limited edition number X/2012. The watch is powered by the manually wound Omega calibre 1861, based on the Lemania 1873, composed of 18 jewels, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offering a 48-hour power reserve. It’s fitted with a vintage-style brown leather strap with an Omega stainless steel pin buckle and is delivered with a second black and white Omega NATO strap in the James Bond style.
Why this watch
This Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday appeals through its balance between space heritage and iconic design. Its “reverse panda” dial offers excellent legibility and a strong visual identity, directly inspired by the Alaska Project prototypes. The calibre 1861, a historic movement from the Moonwatch lineage, ensures proven reliability and an authentic manual-winding experience. Its limited production of 2,012 pieces, now sold out and no longer available in the Omega catalogue, makes it particularly sought after by Speedmaster collectors and enthusiasts of models with strong historical value.
