* On 7 September 1533, at Greenwich, near London, Elizabeth I, Queen of England and Ireland, was born. Daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, she belonged to the famous Tudor dynasty. Elisabeth received a very complete education according to humanist principles: she studied classical letters, rhetoric, history and ethics. She learned several languages, practiced music and translated the works of ancient philosophers. After the death of her father and half-sister, Mary I, Elizabeth took over from the Tudor and was crowned queen at Westminster Abbey in 1559, at the age of 25. From then on, she ruled her kingdom shaken by religious and social conflicts with remarkable political talent, legendary diplomatic dexterity and unwavering passion. The victory of the English fleet against the Spanish armada during the Anglo-Spanish War (1585-1604) was proof of this. Without having given birth to a child and without being married, the so-called "virgin queen" dies at the age of 69, exhausted by her four decades of reign. She was buried at her coronation site: at Westminster Abbey in London.
