Buy a pre-owned Tiffany & Co. piece at The Swiss Collector
Founded in New York on 18 September 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young, Tiffany & Co. is one of the most recognised jewellery houses in the world. From the very beginning, the house set itself apart by an uncompromising approach : fixed prices, rigorous selection and impeccable aesthetics. Tiffany Blue (a colour registered under Pantone code 1837 in honour of the founding year) has become one of the most recognisable visual codes in the history of luxury. In 1886, the house invented the modern engagement ring with the Tiffany Setting, a six-prong solitaire that elevates the diamond to capture the light. Acquired by the LVMH group in January 2021 for USD 15.8 billion, Tiffany & Co. remains a global cultural icon. At The Swiss Collector, our pre-owned Tiffany & Co. selection is constantly evolving, with every piece being unique.
Tiffany & Co.'s History : 187 Years of American Jewellery
The Founding and the "King of Diamonds" (1837–1900)
Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young opened their first shop at 259 Broadway in New York with USD 1,000. The store initially sold stationery and fancy goods. Tiffany quickly grasped the potential of precious stones and steered the house toward jewellery. In 1867, Tiffany won the Grand Prix for Silverware at the Universal Exhibition in Paris : the first American company to be honoured by a foreign jury. In 1878, the house acquired the Tiffany Diamond, a 128.54-carat yellow diamond cut from a 287-carat rough stone : one of the largest and finest yellow diamonds in the world. In 1887, the house purchased a portion of the French Crown Jewels. Charles Lewis Tiffany became known as "The King of Diamonds." He was also the first American jeweller to adopt the 925/1000 silver standard, which later became the US national standard.
Iconic Designers and Cultural Consecration (1900–1990)
In 1940, the flagship moved to its permanent address : the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York. In 1956, Jean Schlumberger joined Tiffany and revolutionised high jewellery with naturalist creations inspired by flowers, birds and insects : worn by Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor and Greta Garbo. In 1961, the film Breakfast at Tiffany's with Audrey Hepburn permanently anchored the house in global pop culture. In 1974, Elsa Peretti joined Tiffany and created sculptural jewels inspired by the human body and nature : Open Heart, Bean, Diamonds by the Yard and Wave. In 1980, Paloma Picasso (daughter of the painter) brought an artistic and colourful dimension with her Graffiti and Olive Leaf collections.
The LVMH Revival and the Contemporary Era (2014–Today)
In 2014, the Tiffany T collection was launched : geometric lines built around the letter T, in 18k gold and diamonds. It became an immediate worldwide success and the house's most emblematic collection in decades. In 2017, the HardWear collection drew inspiration from New York chain links. In 2021, after a turbulent LVMH acquisition, Alexandre Arnault took charge of the brand's creative renewal. In 2023, the Fifth Avenue flagship reopened after a complete renovation by Peter Marino : named The Landmark, it became a cultural centre across 10 floors featuring works by Daniel Arsham, Jenny Holzer and Rashid Johnson. That same year, Beyoncé and Jay-Z starred in the About Love campaign, with Beyoncé wearing the Tiffany Diamond.

Tiffany & Co. vs Cartier vs Van Cleef & Arpels : which one to choose ?
Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels are the three most searched jewellery houses on the pre-owned market worldwide. Here is our objective comparison.
Tiffany & Co.
The benchmark of American jewellery. Its positioning is unique : accessible silver pieces (Return to Tiffany, T, Elsa Peretti) sitting alongside exceptional high jewellery (Setting, Jean Schlumberger). The Blue Box is a universally recognised emotional symbol. Secondary market liquidity is excellent : Tiffany is one of the easiest jewellery brands to resell worldwide. Ideal for first luxury jewellery purchases and for experienced collectors alike.
Cartier
The French benchmark for luxury jewellery. Love, Juste un Clou, Trinity : classics that maintain or exceed their value pre-owned, with regular price increases. Cartier benefits from stronger name recognition and liquidity than Tiffany on European and Asian markets.
Van Cleef & Arpels
The most patrimonial high jewellery house. The Alhambra pieces in particular appreciate strongly : limited editions and rare materials consistently exceed their purchase price on the secondary market. Van Cleef appeals to seasoned collectors.
The Swiss Collector's verdict
For a first entry into luxury jewellery with strong emotional value and solid resale potential, Tiffany is the ideal choice. For maximum patrimonial appreciation in Europe, Cartier leads. For the safest long-term jewellery investment, Van Cleef & Arpels is the benchmark.

Care for a Pre-Owned Tiffany & Co. Piece
Sterling silver 925
Tiffany sterling silver can tarnish over time through contact with air and perspiration. Regular cleaning with a soft silver polishing cloth is sufficient to restore its lustre. Avoid baths, pools and chemical products.
Platinum
Tiffany platinum (950 parts per thousand) is the most durable metal used by the house, ideal for rings worn daily. It does not oxidise but may develop a natural patina with wear : a sign of a loved and worn piece.
Diamonds
Tiffany offers a free lifetime maintenance service for engagement rings purchased from them : cleaning, prong inspection and replacement if necessary.
