Founded in Milan in 1967 by Pino Rabolini, heir to a family of goldsmiths, Pomellato revolutionised the jewellery world by introducing a concept that was then unheard of : ready-to-wear. Rabolini's ambition was clear from the start : to create jewels meant to be worn every day, not just for special occasions. Semi-precious coloured stones, often overlooked by traditional jewellers, became the stars of bold compositions hand-crafted in the Milanese workshops. Now part of the Kering group since 2013, Pomellato retains its creative independence and produces every piece in its Casa in Milan, where more than 100 craftspeople perpetuate the lost-wax microfusion technique. At The Swiss Collector, our pre-owned Pomellato selection is constantly evolving, with every piece being unique.

Pomellato's History : 57 Years of Milanese Audacity

The Founding Break (1967–1980)

Pino Rabolini opened the Pomellato Maison in Milan in 1967, in a period of cultural upheaval. His positioning was radical : by breaking the codes of traditional jewellery (reserved for great occasions, dominated by white diamonds and sober metals) he proposed jewels in bold colours with generous forms, mounted on gold treated in a modern way (hammered, satin-finished, burnished). The name Pomellato evokes dapple-grey horses, whose spotted coats reflect the colourful diversity at the heart of the House. The first advertising campaigns were entrusted to Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts and Horst P. Horst : an immediate statement that Pomellato was playing in the same arena as the great fashion houses.

The Golden Age and Iconic Collections (1980–2010)

The 1980s established Pomellato as the jeweller of the moment. Collections followed one another at a pace closer to fashion than to jewellery : a revolution in the industry. In 1995, Pomellato created the Dodo jewels, a line of charming lucky charms for all generations. The Griffe rings (1995) and Gourmette (1997) joined the iconic archives. In 2001, the Nudo collection was launched : a rose gold ring with a stone cut in cabochon, set in a mysterious way that makes it appear to float on the finger. The success was immediate and worldwide : the Nudo became the House's signature ring. In 2007, Pomellato moved into high jewellery with the Pom Pom collection, built around rare, large-format stones.

Kering, Sustainability and Renewal (2013–Today)

In 2013, Pomellato joined the Kering group, enabling faster international development while preserving its creative identity. The House has made a strong commitment to sustainability : its gold is responsibly certified, and Pomellato aims for 100% responsible collections. In 2017, for its fiftieth anniversary, the House launched the #PomellatoForWomen campaign, celebrating inspiring women and female leadership worldwide. The patented Nudo cut at 57 facets (developed to liberate rather than constrain the natural beauty of the stone) has become a unique technical signature. Today, each day in the Milanese workshop, more than 100 craftspeople shape jewels in signature rose gold, fine diamonds and coloured stones from the four corners of the world.

Pomellato vs Cartier vs Bulgari : which one to choose ?

Pomellato is often compared to Cartier and Bulgari by buyers looking for colourful, recognisable luxury jewellery designed for everyday wear.

Pomellato

The choice for the jewellery lover who wants to express individuality through colour and character, without relying on the classic codes of white diamonds. Pomellato offers living, tactile jewellery designed to be worn every day. Its pre-owned positioning remains very accessible relative to retail prices : making it an intelligent entry point into luxury jewellery.

Cartier

The world benchmark for luxury jewellery. Cartier classics (Love, Juste un Clou, Trinity) enjoy exceptional secondary market appreciation, often above their purchase price for the most sought-after references. Cartier appeals to buyers looking for universally recognised value.

Bulgari

The Roman house is Italy's reference for bold, colourful jewellery. Bulgari shares with Pomellato a taste for coloured stones and strong graphic designs, but at a higher price point. Bulgari pieces (Serpenti, B.zero1) benefit from strong international name recognition and good secondary market liquidity.

The Swiss Collector's verdict

For colourful everyday jewellery with genuine artisanal character, Pomellato is hard to beat at its price level. For maximum patrimonial appreciation, Cartier leads. For Italian colourful jewellery with strong visual impact, Bulgari and Pomellato are the two references.

Pomellato and Notable Personalities

Pre-Owned Pomellato Buying Guide

  • Budget : Pre-owned Pomellato pieces start from CHF 450 for vintage pieces or small models, up to CHF 7,000 for Capri or Sabbia in rare stones.

  • Condition : We classify each piece (mint, very good, good, worn) with high-resolution photographs. For rose gold rings (Pomellato's signature metal) light surface micro-scratches are normal with wear and can be easily polished out.

  • The stone drives the value : At Pomellato, a piece's value is strongly correlated with the quality and colour of its stone. A Nudo in Blue London Topaz is worth 15 to 30% more than an equivalent Nudo in a standard stone.

  • Secure delivery : Insured and trackable shipping worldwide.

Care for a Pre-Owned Pomellato Piece

Rose gold

Pomellato's signature rose gold alloy is composed of gold, copper and silver. It develops a subtle patina over time that gives it a unique character. It can be re-polished by a jeweller to restore its original lustre.

Semi-precious stones

The topaz, quartz, prasiolite, garnet and amethyst used by Pomellato are robust stones but sensitive to sharp impacts. Avoid contact with chemical products (perfume, detergent) and remove the piece for sporting activities.

The Nudo setting

The mysterious setting that characterises the Nudo collection is delicate. After an impact, a check with a jeweller is advisable to ensure the stone remains perfectly secure.

The Swiss Collector's View on Pomellato Jewellery

"Pomellato is one of the rare houses to have created a genuine jewellery language : recognisable at first glance, yet never ostentatious. The Nudo remains one of the most copied rings in the history of contemporary jewellery, and yet every original piece retains something unique thanks to the natural variations of its stone. At The Swiss Collector, pre-owned Pomellato pieces are among our most requested, and for good reason : Milanese craftsmanship at an accessible price is rare."
